Pets can be found various ways but mostly from Pet Eggs.

Pets are in the form of an item known as a Pet Flute which you can use to summon the specific pet.

Pets have a 50% chance of being a Fighter which means they will fight mobs to help you in battle, if they are not a fighter they will just follow you around.

Chara in Honeyfir always sells a standard Pet Egg for 2,000 coins, but other NPC's may sell other eggs from time to time, and Dungeon bosses have chances to drop pets too.
